What is the difference between tequila and reposado?

Reposado is a type of tequila, not a separate drink. All tequila starts as blue Weber agave that is cooked, fermented and distilled, as explained in how tequila is made. What separates the categories is time in oak.

Blanco is bottled unaged or rested under two months. Reposado, Spanish for "rested," spends at least two months and usually up to a year in barrels, which softens the spirit and adds vanilla, caramel and light spice. Añejo rests one year or more.

Our guide to what is reposado tequila compares all four side by side. TROPA Reposado rests three months in American oak, keeping the agave in front with hazelnut, vanilla and caramel behind it.

The limited TROPA Añejo goes longer.
