What is considered top shelf tequila?

"Top shelf" has no legal definition. It's a bar and retail term for the best bottles on offer, and in tequila it usually means 100% agave, a traceable distillery, careful production and often oak aging in a reposado, añejo or extra añejo. Price follows, with top-shelf bottles typically costing well above entry-level tequila. Judge by the label and the liquid, not the shelf.

Aged tequilas dominate the top shelf because time in oak adds depth. See which reposado tequila is considered top-shelf for one example, and is there a $1000 bottle of tequila available for the far end of the range. TROPA Reposado is 100% agave, aged in American oak.
