Look for three things: "100% agave" on the label, an age statement and a bottle worth displaying. Reposado is the safest gift because it sips smoothly and still works in cocktails, so it suits both a beginner and a seasoned drinker. Añejo is richer and slower, a better match for someone who likes bourbon or aged spirits. Skip anything labeled simply "tequila," since it can be a mixto.
