There is no official three-tier system, but most people mean the three core styles nearly every brand sells: blanco, reposado and añejo. Blanco is bright, peppery and agave-forward. Reposado rests at least two months in oak, adding vanilla and caramel while keeping the agave in front.
Añejo rests at least a year in small barrels and turns rich, dark and oak-driven. The legal standard adds two more classes, joven and extra añejo, which our guide to the types of tequila explains. Some people also use "tiers" for price levels, from well tequila up to ultra-premium. Either way, reposado sits in the balanced middle.
